Differences between magnet systems and pot magnets

The term 'magnet system' is not used consistently in the magnet industry. Sometimes magnet systems are likened to pot magnets, which is what we have done for a long time. To ensure a better understanding of how these products work, we would now like to make a clearer distinction between the two terms. The designs of these magnets have, besides some similarities, also some important differences, as shown in the following summary:
Pot magnets
  • A pot magnet contains only one magnet.
  • The magnet is embedded in a steel pot.
  • In general, pot magnets do not have a rubber casing since the magnet inside the pot loses a significant amount of adhesive force even at a small distance.
  • Two pot magnets cannot be combined with each other. They repel each other because they have the same pole on their respective contact surfaces.
Magnet systems
  • Small magnet systems consist of one magnet; larger magnet systems have several magnets, assembled with alternating poles.
  • The magnets are mounted on a steel plate.
  • Many magnet systems are coated in rubber or plastic.
  • Two magnet systems can be combined with each other due to the alternating polarity of the magnets. However, depending on the adhesive force, they may be difficult to separate again.

Tips for the use of magnet systems

  • Use magnet systems with neodymium magnets for interior applications. Though the rubber coating protects the neodymium magnets somewhat from water and moisture, rust may form during long-term outdoor use. As a result, individual magnet pieces could splinter or break off, or the magnet could break entirely; all of which leads to a loss of its original adhesive force. Magnet systems with ferrite magnets, on the other hand, can be used outdoors without hesitation.
  • The indicated adhesive force is always measured perpendicular to the intended mounting surface. Because of the displacement force, the load capacity of magnet systems is considerably less when used on a wall as opposed to ceiling applications. With a rubberised magnet system, the adhesive force in the shear direction is significantly higher, because it is increased by friction. The tensile load-bearing capacity, however, is slightly lower.
  • Magnet systems often contain several magnets that are arranged with alternating poles. It makes it possible to combine two magnet systems with each other.
