Although the rings are diametrically magnetised, you can still pile them up this way - but only when you first turn each ring in the right direction.
That means that when you lay the ring flat in front of you, the north pole is, for instance, on the left half and the south pole on the right half. The rings stick to one another sideways just like when you put down backgammon pieces.
